DC Area Forecast: Frighteningly Cold for Halloween, Then Warmer on the Weekend

  • Today: Partly sunny and much cooler. Peaks: 47-55.
  • This evening: Becoming windy overnight. Minimums: 30-40.
  • Tomorrow: Partly to mostly sunny, windy. Highs: 47-54.

THE A dramatic cold front sweeping across the country finally arrived in Washington reaching highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s through Thursday. We should benefit from good sunshine over the next few days, as well as strong winds tomorrow. Lows could dip into the frigid 20s in our outer suburbs Wednesday and Thursday night, but highs would then rebound into the 60s by this weekend.

Today (Halloween): A cooler start this morning in the 40s. Partly sunny skies are trying to combat our much colder to colder air mass, but highs are still struggling to reach the 40s to mid 50s .The northeast wind gusting 5 to 10 mph, with a few higher gusts, provides a slight wind chill. Trust: medium-high

This evening: Evening temperatures drop into the 40s for treats under partly cloudy skies. Becoming windier and colder overnight with dawn lows ranging from near 30 in the coldest locations to near 40 in the city. Nighttime northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with occasional higher gusts. Trust: medium-high

Tomorrow (Wednesday): This is expected to be our coldest day of the week, as even partly or mostly sunny skies can’t push temperatures above the mid-40s or below the 50s. The worst is the wind, sustained between 15 and 20 mph from the northwest with occasional gusts up to 30-35 mph. This also means some pretty cold wind chills. Trust: medium-high

Tomorrow evening: Diminishing winds allow temperatures to become even colder than tonight. Look for temperatures above 20C in the far west and northwest suburbs to the mid to upper 30s in the city. Trust: medium-high

THURSDAY should find mostly sunny skies with temperatures still colder than normal in the low to mid 50s. Thursday night is again mostly clear and cold with lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s. Trust: medium-high

Friday starts out pretty cold, but sunny skies and warmer breezes push temperatures toward normal levels in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Friday evening is expected to be partly cloudy with lows between 30 and 40 degrees. Trust: medium-high

This first weekend November brings warmer weather as Saturday highs move into the mid 60s to near 70 with partly to mostly sunny skies. A few clouds could appear Saturday evening with lows ranging from near 40 in the suburbs to near 50 in the city. On Sunday there could be increasing clouds with highs in the 60s and the possibility of a light shower in the afternoon or evening. Confidence: average
