A man armed with a gun was arrested Tuesday across from Union Station on Capitol Hill, U.S. Capitol Police said.
Capitol Police said one of their officers spotted the man walking around with a “long gun” in the park along Delaware Avenue NE, across from Union Station. The officers ordered him to drop the weapon and tased him when he did not obey, police said.
A police officer told NBC News that the suspect had “an AR-15.”
The suspect was carrying a backpack, which police deemed suspicious. Officers cleared the park while they inspected the backpack.
Officers were seen sprinting toward the Capitol as the incident unfolded, and others followed. The small park is not far from three Senate office buildings.
Police said they “have no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat.”
Police are not sure how the suspect got to the park, whether by public transportation, on foot or by car.
Columbus Circle between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues NE and D Street between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues NE are closed while police investigate.
